These handrails for Balliol College in Oxford mark the completion of the recent refurbishment of the universities porters lodge. Along with the pedestrian gates that we made the year before, our traditionally forged handrails are designed to sit seamlessly within this historic setting.
The design features hot punched detailing in the uprights through which the horizontal bars then pass. The top rail has a wonderfully tactile feel because we forged a bespoke handrail section.
Accuracy was vital with this commission as the handrail had to seamlessly follow the myriad of angles and slopes within the stonework plinth. Having conducted a detailed site survey we constructed a series of full size templates within our Sussex workshop. Each individual upright was diamond drilled into the stone giving an extremely strong and stable structure.
