The ‘Arnolds’ gates

The ‘Arnolds’ gates form part of the extensive refurbishment to a private home in the Ashdown forest, East Sussex.

Working closely with landscape designer Hannah Oakden  we developed a cohesive package of work that included pedestrian gates, automated driveway gates, as well as various railings and balustrades.

The inspiration for this design came from carved wooden cosmological detailing on a huge organ that the clients commissioned for the adjacent concert hall. The repeat pattern in the design is also reminiscent of musical notes, an unintentional but welcome coincidence. This design concept was then carried through all the work we developed, uniting each piece within the garden.

The various gates mark the entrances to the terrace from the less formal areas within the garden. The rich palette of riven stone worked particularly well with patinated finish of the gates, helping to give a timeless feel to the metal work.
